The Evolution of Vikas Bank
The Evolution of Vikas Bank's and its success story is a living testimony to how youth power, energy, imagination and creativity can contribute to the society. The journey of Vikas Bank which started as a small dream of like-minded friends to the proud moment of being prestigious cooperative bank is a curious and inspirational one.
A group of social minded youths of Sindhanur in Raichur district came together to form Vikas Yuvaka Mandali in 1979. In a short span of time, the Youth Club won the State Award for its social work. Some members of Vikas Yuvaka Mandali later shifted to Hosapete in Bellary district to pursue their career and employment. But carried the activities of Youth club in Hosapete also and again won the state award.
A time came later in the mid 90’s the liberalization policy of the Reserve Bank of India paved way for opening of banks in Cooperative sector. The members of Vikasa Yuvaka Mandali were of the unanimous opinion that the Youth Club should enter into a new dimension of social work by setting up a bank under the principle of cooperation. Thus in 1997 Vikas Bank started its operations in Hosapete and today has Branches in Sindhanuru, Hubballi, Gangavati, Kotturu, Ballari Toranagallu and Bidar, and is recognised as one of the Model Cooperative Bank of the area.
Cooperative sector development:
Due to the mismanagement of some co-operatives, many co-operative banks came under loss and liquidation. In such a grim situation Vikas Bank took a bold step to merge Abhinandan Cooperative Bank of Hubballi with Vikas Bank in 2008. This initiative of Vikas Bank saved hundreds of depositors and customers of Abhinandan Bank from losses. This experiment of merger can be said to be unique in the state and thus Vikas Bank contributed to the development of the cooperative sector in its own way for strengthening the Cooperative Sector.
